The professional world can feel crowded. It is easy to get lost in a sea of qualified people, all applying for the same roles. So, how do you make sure you are seen? The answer lies not just in what you have done, but in the story you tell about your work. This is your personal brand.
Think of your personal brand as your professional reputation, shaped by your actions and your communication. It is that clear sense of who you are, what you stand for, and the unique value you bring to a team or project. It is the thread that connects your experiences, your skills, and your goals.
You might wonder if this is necessary. The truth is, a thoughtful personal brand offers subtle but powerful benefits.
First, it helps you stand out. When you clearly articulate your specific skills and your perspective, you become more than a list of job titles on a page. You become a distinct and memorable individual. This clarity helps the right people, whether recruiters or future collaborators, notice you in a crowded field.
Second, it builds genuine trust. A strong personal brand shows consistency and expertise. When people can see a coherent story of your career journey and your accomplishments, it builds confidence in what you can achieve. It shows you are not just looking for a job, but you are building a career with purpose.
Finally, it opens doors to connection. Your brand acts like a magnet, naturally attracting people and opportunities that fit your goals. A well maintained online profile, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, makes it easier for others to find you, understand what you are about, and start a meaningful conversation.
So, where do you start? For many of us, LinkedIn is the natural home for your professional story. This is where employers go to look for more than just your experience and education. Employers may find you whilst searching for potential candidates or look you up prior to an interview. They are looking for your professional traits and your attitude.
On Thursday at our London Centre, our director James Herbertson gave us a session about how to build your personal brand through LinkedIn. His recommendation was to start with your headline. Think of it as your professional handshake. In a few words, it should say who you are and what you do. He gave a suggested prompt of how you could use ChatGPT or Gemini to give you multiple headline options that represent who you are, what you represent, the experience you have the value you add.
Then he suggested for you to move on to your summary. This is your chance to share your story, your goals, and your personality. What are the top three things you want someone to know about you?
We then completed the session looking at how you can build your connections and network, use media to build your profile and create alignment with future employers. Building your personal brand is not about being the loudest voice in the room. It is about being the clearest. It is about taking gentle ownership of your own narrative.
